The Words that Matter

Our friend Sharon always reminds us “Words matter!”

The truthful, timely word, the encouraging word, the destructive one.  They are all composing the story of our life.

Like a mess of Christmas lights though, we often get tangled up in the fearful words.  The “not enough”, “failing grade”, “grim prognosis”, “overwhelming odds” words.  We need to become unknotted with reassurance from God’s Word.

Words matter.  But the words that trump all – that matter most – are God’s Words.

Are they magic?  As soon as you read them are you immediately Super Christian, able to jump the hurdles of fear and discouragement in a single bound?  No.  But what and who we listen to will affect what we do.  Who we are.  How we think.  Words matter.  Like the music you listen to affects your mood, or who you spend time with can change your whole day.

So today, replace the taunts of fear with words of strength from the One who loves you most.

“In the beginning (before the sin and separation and fear) was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through Him all things we’re made, without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life and that life was the light of all people.  The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5

“The Lord will fight for you.  You only need to be still.” Exodus 14:14

“Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to the Lord.” Deuteronomy 1:7

“The Lord makes firm the steps of those who delight in Him; thought they stumble, they will not fall, for the Lord upholds them with His hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower.  The righteous run to it and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10

“Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid.  God will be with you and will never forsake you.” Joshua 1:9

What are your go-to verses when you are afraid?

Note:  It’s almost Thanksgiving and we’re beginning the slide into Christmas and then a New Year.  Do-overs and resolutions and sparkly white beginnings.

This year my “One Word” has been “Fearless” and many of you have joined me in asking God what He might have to teach us about “fearing not”.  Together we’ve prayed and paid attention and hopefully have grown even just a tad in the process.

Some of you have shared your experiences and insights on guest posts.  But as the year draws to a close, I want to ask all of you who are willing, to be reflecting on what you’ve learned this past year regarding fear.  In a few weeks I’m going to ask you to share in the comments so we can all benefit.  I’d love it if you want to email me about your experiences too!  lauracrosby.mn@gmail.com

OneWord2013_Fearless“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him , who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

“I have told you this things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
